"Built in 1907, The Stoneholm is the most magnificent building of its type in Greater Boston- a splendid Baroque extravaganza that holds the high ground above Beacon Street with great distinction. It was designed by famed architect Arthur Bowditch as one of the most fashionable apartment houses of the time."
To this day, The Stoneholm still holds this distinction.
This grande dame of Beacon Street was built in 1906 as Beacon Street was widened to serve as a promenade designed by famed architect Frederick Law Olmstead. The Stoneholm was designed to serve as a showpiece on that promenade. With the commission granted to notable architect Arthur Bowditch, he chose the intricacies and fine details of Second Empire period of design and created this Beaux-Arts style jewel.
An elegantly sculpted, gracious, double granite staircase opens to a broad granite walkway through a formal garden to the glass enclosed vestibule with arched, vaulted ceiling and walls laden with mosaic tiles, marble, and granite - the show-stopping entrance to The Stoneholm. Double French doors open to the marble foyer lined with stained glass windows, dentil moldings, cornices, pilasters, and gold-touched garland and festoons.
The distinctive east and west wings await your ascent via two separate elevators or one of two distinctive marble staircases lined with rich ¾ height mahogany paneling.
Originally designed with two grand apartments per floor per wing, each front wing housed approximately 3,000 square feet of living space, and each back corner home housed approximately 2,450 square feet. These gracious apartments were subdivided between the 1950’s and the 1970’s; and then the building was converted from apartments to condominiums in 1996. Currently, there are five 700 square foot 1-bedroom units; two 1200 square foot 1 bedroom with office; seven 1270 square foot 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom units; four 1400 square foot 2-bedroom units with 1-2 baths; four 1810 square foot 2-bedroom, 2-bath units; one 2000 square foot 2-3 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit; two 2250 square foot 3-bedroom, 3-bath wing units. One 2600 square foot 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom wing unit; one 2420 square foot back corner unit; and two 3000 square foot wing units with 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths. There are a total of 31 deeded units, some of which have been combined to create more dramatic spaces. (Square footage, bedroom and bathroom count is approximate and for descriptive purposes only.)
The level of detail is such that the materials and decorative design elements were carried throughout the building. The marble in the lobby is reflected in the mosaic in the vestibule and in the marble in the fireplaces located within the units, from rose, to canary yellow with blue veining, to dark green that appears almost black. The columns and pilasters are carried through the main halls of the units as are the decorative picture moldings.
For outdoor space, there is a molded granite seating area on Beacon Street facing the building where one can sit to admire the building and the garden. Six condominium units located on the second and third floors have granite balconies. The units located on the 5th floor are lucky enough to have the rights to exclusive use of the roof above their units. Many units Incorporate built in window seats to enjoy the views from the extraordinarily large windows.
While laundry is allowable within the units, there is a common laundry room. Each unit comes with an assigned storage space – sizes vary from a closet to a room. Additional building features include a private and locked package delivery room, specific areas for secure bicycle storage, and intercom service from the entry to each owner's phone number of choice.
Parking was added to the property through two parking lots built in 2004 with 28 parking spaces. Each space is separately deeded and owned individually by Condominium owners.
The property is professionally managed, maintained, and landscaped and guided by a five-member Board of Trustees.
(Square footage, bedroom and bathroom count is approximate and for descriptive purposes only. Number of units deeded differs from number of units as combined and used.)
Much care is taken to maintain the unique and special architecture of The Stoneholm and its integrity.
